Why I Built RepLog: My Journey to Smarter Music Practice

As a musician, I spent years trying to track my practice sessions. From scribbling tempos on sticky notes to maintaining overly complex spreadsheets, nothing seemed to work. That's why I built RepLog - a distraction-free tracker designed specifically for musicians to log repetitions, monitor tempo milestones, and make daily practice meaningful.

There is a common saying in music: "Slow practice is the fastest way to get fast." But keeping track of that slow practice is surprisingly hard. For years, my music stand was cluttered with notebooks filled with scribbled dates, half-remembered BPM numbers, and disorganized goals. When I tried using generic habit-tracking apps, they felt too broad - distracting me with irrelevant metrics and notifications when all I wanted was to focus on my instrument.

I realized I didn't need another generic checklist. I needed a dedicated log for my music practice. So, I decided to build one.

The Search for the Perfect Log

Every time I sat down to practice, I faced the same friction. Did I play that scale at 110 BPM or 115 BPM yesterday? How many minutes did I actually spend working on that tricky bar in my current piece? Notebooks got lost, and spreadsheets felt like a chore rather than a help.

RepLog was born out of this frustration. I wanted a standalone utility that would do three things exceptionally well:

  • Be completely friction-free to use right at the instrument.
  • Provide clear, visual progress of tempo/BPM milestones over time.
  • Stay out of the way so I could focus on playing.

How RepLog Changes the Way You Rehearse

Instead of just logging "practiced guitar for 30 minutes," RepLog shifts the focus to deliberate, goal-oriented practice. You break down your rehearsal into specific goals (like mastering a solo, memorizing a scale, or building speed on a specific passage) and track your metrics over time:

  • Distraction-Free Focus: No ads, no social feeds, and no irrelevant gamification. Just you, your goals, and your instrument.
  • Milestone Progression: Log your peak BPM for scales and complex passages to see your speed grow incrementally week after week.
  • Structured Sessions: Integrated timers keep you on track, helping you allocate time effectively between warm-ups, technical exercises, and repertoire.

An App Built by a Musician, for Musicians

RepLog is a true indie project. It’s built with care, designed to be clean, and tailored specifically to the unique needs of musicians who want to build a consistent, rewarding practice habit. This blog will be a space where I share our development roadmap, practice tips, and insights on how to practice more effectively.

Thank you for joining me on this journey.

Grab your instrument, set your goal, and let's get practicing!
